Offerton Green Football Club

History

10/11

The club opted not run a pre-season programme instead they focused mainly on firendlies and left the fine details of fitness down to the individuals.  Also, the club after good work from Twiney and Higgs decided to setup a 4th team for theover 35's still active in the game.  The team has been placed in the cheshire vets league and have some top players invovled.  The 3 other teams have all signed new players as they look to improve on the previous seasons.

2009/2010

It was a glorious season for the reserves who won the back to back titles by securing the 2nd division and going unbeaten all year.  The first team finished runners up in the prem and secured the Sunday FA cup even beating Prem champions Cale Green in a thrilling final.  The B team finished mid-table in the 4th division but secured some good players and look tom improve in 2010/2011.

The Base

During the life time of Offerton green FC, we have had several bases. Originating from the Wrights Arms and moving to the Midway Hotel on Newbridge Lane, following landlord and co-club founder Bob Higginbotham. After Bob’s retirement we had 2 new homes in the coming years both on Newbridge Lane: - Newbridge Con club and the Park Hotel. We had a couple of good years in The Park (ran by Gordon Fatwallet), sadly after Gordon’s death we moved again. A large amount of the lads drank in Offerton at this time and were regulars in
the White House, Landlord Dave Maloney invited to run from there (also home to Meadowk and White Villa). We stayed in the White House for a good number of years this coincided with our best years on the pitch. As the strongest club from the white house it became known as the home of Offerton Green. When Dave Maloney packed his bags so did we, we had a brief spell in Sam’s Bar on the Market before moving to the Bus Club and then in 2009 moving to the Duke of York.

The New Millenium

Andrew Turner also stepped up form captain to 1st team manager; he guided the club back
to the Prem at the first attempt in 2005. Dave Higginbotham also carried his success through to the reserves as they moved up to Div 2 and reaching a cup final on the way, the first ever reserve side to playing the Harold English cup Final. In 2007 Dave Higgy decided he to have another crack at the Prem and with his new partner in crime Asa Crowe, they recruited some of the best players in Stockport. These new players mixed with the current squad had a great season and went on to secure the Prem title, but with the pleasure came the pain, Smailey and Craig had a disastorous spell in charge of the reserves who ended up getting relegated. 2008/2009 brought great success for Terry Ashworths reserve side, accompanied by Dave Higginbotham the team did the league and cup double.

The 90's

In 1993 the club did the double by winning div 3 and the Paul Bailey/Graham Wright trophy
which they retained the following year. The next 4 season were the most successful ever,
The Green marched through Divisions towards the Premier. In 1996 the club reached the
Premier for the 1st time.

The club found it hard at first in the Premier; injuries to key players at this time did not help.
For a few years the club yo-yoed between the top 2 divisions. In the late 90s the club changed yet again, for the 1st time in the history of the club a 3rd Team was conceived.

The 70's & 80's

During the mid seventies the club lost its home pitch at Offey House and were moved to
St Tommys Rec, the spiritual home of the club. Offerton Green still play on The Rec to this day.

In the early 80s the team were slightly more successful, they had a record breaking season in 81, winning Div 2 and conceding the least ever goals. The following season the team
finished 3rd in Div 1, failing to gain promotion by 1 point. Following the disappointment many
players left and the club was in a state of turmoil as they were relegated to Div 3.

In the late 80 the club were languishing in the 3rd Division and it was decided that Bob Higgy
would step aside for his young brother to have a crack. Acting as a manager, player and secretary, Dave assembled a great team and took the team on to one of their most successful periods. Players like Neil Clegg, Paul Burton, Craig Turner, Ray Davies, Colin Derbyshire, Wayne Harrison, Andrew Turner, Dave Corbott, Dave and Steve McGreal were brought in.

The Committee

A committee was formed to look after the club and in their 1st Season they won the Division 6 Championship. The committee was made up of Bob Higginbotham snr, Arthur ‘Pard’ Seaton,
Colin ‘Spock’ Fletcher, Bill Egan, Mick Kelly, Bill and Derek Watts and Paul Greeney,
later joined by Neville Booth. Some of the players from the original team were: Ted Taylor,
Jimmy Reid, Gary Rider, Frank Wilde, John Seaton, Micky Spratt, Ken Foulks, Colin Reid,
Jack Bowden, Alex Gill, John Burton, John Marriott (apologies for any omissions).

8 years after the league win they picked up the Paul Bailey/Graham Wright Trophy
for the 1st time. Around this time the club were fielding a strong reserve side
that who were successful in their own right.

The Begining

Offerton Green F.C. traces its routes back to the Wrights Arms pub in Offerton.
The first Offerton Green match was arranged in 1968, when Bob Higginbotham Jnr
and Wrights Arms regular Colin Fletcher (Mr Spock) decided to put together a team
from the pub to play against a team from the Adswood Hotel (later becoming Cale Green).
The game was a success and they decided to enter the team in the Stockport Sunday league, the team would be named Offerton Green.
